A March and Rally, November 18, 2006
Another Successful FOLF Event!
This dog-friendly event signaled the one-year countdown to overturn the State's unjust decision to close Lighthouse Field State Beach for off-leash access in November 2007. The event got the attention of local residents here in Santa Cruz as well as the news media throughout the Central Coast and San Francisco Bay Area. See media coverage including an exclusive report by canine roving reporter, Bandit Z. Beedle.
The community procession and rally was in support of local management and community control of Lighthouse Field State Beach.
Starting from Depot Park, FOLFers and their leashed dogs walked along West Cliff Drive to the Its Beach stairs where they crossed the street into the field for the official Paws in the Park rally.
The numbers:
- 150+ very well-behaved dogs
- 200+ Friends of Lighthouse Field
- 2 Santa Cruz mayors: Cynthia Mathews (current mayor) and Emily Reilly (incoming mayor) who both spoke in support of FOLF's efforts to keep off-leash dog privileges at the field and Its Beach
- 3 Santa Cruz city council members: Ryan Coonerty, Tony Madrigal and Lynn Robinson who also attended (Ryan also spoke in our support)
- 4 - the magical hour when the rally officially started and the dogs were allowed to lose their leashes!
Thanks to all the tireless volunteers who helped make this event happen! It couldn't have taken place without the ongoing committment and dedication of this passionate community!
We also thank our city leaders for recognizing the value that this caring and committed off-leash dog community brings to Santa Cruz!
